Summer, 1518. A strange sickness sweeps through Strasbourg: women dance in the streets, some until they fall down dead. As rumors of witchcraft spread, suspicion turns toward Lavinia and her family, and Lavinia may have to do the unimaginable to save herself and everyone she loves.
Five centuries later, a pair of red shoes seal to Rosella Oliva’s feet, making her dance uncontrollably. They draw her toward a boy who knows the dancing fever’s history better than anyone: Emil, whose family was blamed for the fever five hundred years ago. But there’s more to what happened in 1518 than even Emil knows, and discovering the truth may decide whether Rosella survives the red shoes.
With McLemore’s signature lush prose, Dark and Deepest Red pairs the forbidding magic of a fairy tale with a modern story of passion and betrayal.
➽ WHY I WANT TO READ THIS BOOK??
As a kid I had a book. It was a book of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. It was my most hated book — I read it nearly every day. H.Ch.A. had always a way of ending his stories that made my skin crawl — it wasn’t Disney’s happy endings anymore. But also it’s what made me obsess over them.
In the end, his stories had the most impact on me. I hated them. I loved them. I wanted to change things because of them.
So, of course, I would be obsessed with retellings of his work. Of course, I would latch onto something I wanted since I was a little kid.
Because somebody else read H.Ch.A.’s stories and thought ‘I love those so much I need to change something about it.’
➽ ONE MORE THING!!
I got accepted for an eARC of this on Edelweiss+ so I’m not exactly ‘waiting’ for it but also I want to show this off to the world so stay tuned for my review sometime soon!
