Top Ten Tuesday: Changes in My Reading Life ๐Ÿ”–

Hello friends!

Wow, this TTT is a hard one but an interesting one.

My reading habits changed so much over the years????

Since I joined goodreads and started reading again (I don’t remember when I stopped but it was between middle school and high school??? High school, more likely) I had many ups and downs, trials and errors, ect, ect…

And now that I’m getting my messy brain medicated — even more changes occured.

So, let’s see what aspects I can name off the top of my head.

November 19: Changes In My Reading Life (Maybe you like different genres or topics, maybe you read faster than you used to, maybe you only like standalones now)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and you can find weekly topics on her page.

๐Ÿ”– Number of read books per year

That’s the easiest one to observe.

Before joining GR I had the worst reading slump of my life. I doubt I could hit 10 books in a year — I don’t have any logs or diaries so I don’t really remember but it was BAD.

Afetr joining GR I slowly first hit my 50 books goal then 100 and last year I nearly doubled that.

But last year I was stress reading and focusing on books instead of dealing with my anxiety so I’m not that disappointed that I’m still under 100 at the moment.

I may have lowered my number but I have time for other aspects of my life now.

๐Ÿ”– Number of ‘currently-reading’ books

Back before GR times it never even OCCURED to me that you can read more than one book at a time!

I just picked up a book and read it until I was done with it.

But between 2017 and 2018 I had A System.

1 novel + 1 short story + 1 graphic novel + 1 non-fiction (+ 1 fanfiction?)

It was a great system!

I could swap between them depending on what I was in a mood for and if I finished one I never had a problem of ‘what next’ because I had 3 other things until I decided.

And all the formats were distinct enough that I didn’t have to worry I might mix up one with the other.

ONLY POSITIVES!

I’m back to more or less one thing at a time now though, LOL.

My medication works in a way that helps me focus on One Thing (and it’s super helpful in my other life stuff!) so I just don’t feel like reading more things most of the time? And I switch between reading and my other hobbies now so there’s that.

๐Ÿ”– The lenght & the format

I’m lumping those together because they’re kind of connected and also I want to use the cool number of three instead of ten.

So, of course, befre GR first. I was reading only regular novels? Both physical and e-books but regular lenght-wise unless there were some anthologies in a series.

What can I say?? Boring but reliable.

Then came more things.

I started reading short stories to finish my first GR challenge, I think?

It was December and I was far behind and DESPERATE.

Ah, and for some reason I wasn’t adding my manga to GR back then so those numbers lie a little.

Non-fiction I pick up every now and then. It usually takes me the longest to get through so it lasts for a while.

Except art books lately? — I got through 2nd one for Net Galley this autumn. So, GO ME!!!

With graphic novels is a bit more weird because, as I said, I didn’t save my manga on GR but on Baka-Updates Manga and I read A Lot of manga even before GR times. (I think everyone had That Time?) I started reading other types of graphic novels only after joining GR though and ??? I don’t remember the details.

ANYWAY! Last year, during my summer internship, I started on AUDIOBOOKS.

And, friends, it was such a great decision!

I realised that listening to music while working is making me sleepy so I decided to experiment and finally gave a chance to some audiobook. I don’t even remember which one but I could READ and WORK???

BEST. IDEA. EVER.

I got through so many audiobooks that summer. Mostly things I’ve already read because I din’t want to slack off on the clock too much but it was amazing.

Now, I’m back to regular novels mostly though?

I’m not rushing to hit any goals so I don’t look specifically for short stories and when I see a cool graphic novel I pick it up of course and sometimes I listen to cool audiobooks or read some non-fiction.

I just wish I were switching it up a bit more, I guess. I don’t want to end this on a regressive note LMAO.

  1. Great list, E! Itโ€™s funny to see how things change in our reading lives without ever really thinking about it (regularly), huh? I definitely read a lot more outside my comfort zone now and I diversify the types of reads too. Iโ€™m learning how to really appreciate audiobooks ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Yes! I’m a person who usually just goes with the flow of things (unless it’s something that causes me a lot of anxiety and I hit the opposite end of the spectrum ups…) and I don’t really think about the progress of things and stuff so looking back is sure a surprise every time! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Great list! There are a few things I relate to in this – namely the branching out to read multiple formats at the same time so essentially you’re reading more than one book at a time. I only started doing that this year too, once I started blogging ๐Ÿ˜€ Jen

    1. Haha! I still use it but for some ongoing stuff since GR doesn’t let you keep track of the chapters and doesn’t notify you of the new ones *sigh*
Oh, yeah me too! I still need nearly 20 books to hit my challenge so it will be the time to double up on the short stories!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. I love how much GR has changed your reading habits! It’s a fantastic site, I never used to be able to keep track of everything I read before.

I’ve always read more than one book at a time as I find it really helps with reading slumps, plus I read on different formats (ebook, audiobook, print). Although with GR now I can see the books that I’ve been ignoring for months and it’s always looming over me when I log into the app haha

    1. Yes, it gave me the exact ammount of external pressure I need in my life! And introduced me to the bookish community, too!

Oh, it’s so helpful with slumps! I hate that I’ve fallen out of track with it but also, yes, I probably have some books on my GR currently-reading that have been there for over a year….

I did a lot of that in 2017 & 2018 but this year I’ve been mostly down to one too. I want to go back to that juggling though because I had wayy fewer slumps back then!
