The Guide to Spotify Audiobooks 🎧

Hey, friends!

Recently, I’ve been spending a lot of time on Spotify — most of that was about music, of course but I also found out that you can listen to audiobooks there!

I only started one so far and kind of abandoned it but I have some saved and I decided to share so maybe it will be helpful for you guys!

Let’s start with the basics:

Spotify has the official account for all audiobooks and you can find it HERE

They’re all categorised. There’s classics. Sci-fi and Fantasy. Romance. Etc. Etc.

Usually only the first part is in the playlist so you can go into the album and listen from there to make things easier to browse.

BUT IT’S STILL SO MUCH SCROLLING!!

And you don’t see the covers that way so it’s just a neverending list.

Another way to browse audiobooks — if you don’t want to search every book you know separately, that is — is to search for key words.

‘Audiobook’ is self-explanatory, of course. But I found out that searching for ‘unabridged’ gives you much nicer results.

See? ‘Audiobook’ has some songs, some audiobook samples and, you can’t see it but after that it’s mostly classics (which are cool and all but you could find those on Librivox since forever)

‘Unabridged’ gives you audiobooks ONLY and many of them are modern.

OK, but that’s STILL a lot of scrolling. I mean now we have the covers at least?

But there’s also a cool app called Spooks!

You can search for audiobooks there and even save it in your ‘Listen later’ list and it sends you off to Spotify when you play the audiobook. You can also save your favourites and already read books.

OK, that was the guide part but I also want to share my findings.

Maybe I’ll make a thing out of it because I don’t want to make this post too long and I have a few.

(ALSO! A word of advice: if you want to save the audiobooks you found for later don’t like the album! I repeat, DO NOT LIKE THE ALBUM!

It will place every track on the album in your liked songs. And some of those are split into over 300 part. Your liked songs will be A Mess and you’ll never find anything ever again.

Make a playlist instead and save the firsts tracks of each audiobook you want to save. Trust me.)

I’m sharing 10 audiobooks from my saved ones at random but they all look cool:

A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole

Notes on a Nervous Planet by Matt Haig

Exo by Fonda Lee

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

The Serpent’s Secret by Sayantani DasGupta

Drag Teen by Jeffery Self

Descendant of the Crane by Joan He

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller

I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn

OK, that’s all audiobooks I have to share for now.

If this hits off I may make a second and maybe even third part because that’s not even half of what I’ve found but for now 10 is a good round number.

LET’S TALK

  • Do you listen to audiobooks?
  • Any recs?
  • Did you know that you can listen to audiobooks on Spotify?
  • Have you found any cool ones and care to share with the class?

  2. Oh wow, it looks like Spotify has some pretty amazing audiobook options!? I mean, I want to read half of those books and to know that they’re all free?! 😱 Do you know if this is an option that’s only available for premium subscribers (like without ads) or can people who also use Spotify free access it too? I also wonder what the narrators are like and if they’d be the same as the ones who narrate on Audible etc? Will definitely have to check this out. Gonna look at some of these that you found too 😍 Fab post, E!

    1. Yeah, and those are not even half of what I’ve found so far! I was listening to one book before I activated my free Premium trial and it’s ok in the browser but the phone app plays the tracks at random so that won’t work :/ But even if you end up paying the subscription it’s always for the music AND the audiobooks so sounds like a good bargain? I think the narrators stay the same everywhere? IDK how that works 😀
      Thank you, Dini!! ❤

  3. I totally forgot they had audiobooks! I might have to check them out at some point!! Thank you for this awesome guide. (because I would have totally put them in my liked songs.)

  4. I’ve seen this audiobook hack a few times now and tried it myself. I personally cannot stand Spotify’s interface for audiobooks and would rather just wait for my libby holds to come in. Being able to change playback speed and keep my place in the middle of a chapter is way too important to my listening enjoyment.

    1. Oh, yeah. I agree that it’s still a bit messy but I’m hoping that if more people hear about that option and use it they’ll hear our complaints! So hopefully sometime soon it will be easier to navigate ^^

  5. I knew they uploaded poetry and audiobooks to Spotify but I never realised how modern and popular the books actually were. I could only ever find the classics! Really hope they decide to make it easier to search and find them!

    1. Yeah, that’s why I advise to look up ‘unabridged’ not ‘audiobook’! I have no idea why but somehow it works MUCH BETTER! When I first tried looking for audiobooks on Spotify I also brushed it off as classics only thing but lately, I saw some people talking and Spooks and decided to experiment. Glad it paid off! 🙂

That’s part of why I’m spreading the news 😀 I hope that when more people hear about it they’ll see it as a chance to improve some stuff!

  6. I found out that spotify had audio books pretty quickly when I was looking for bookish music playlists. I made the mistake of like the whole album of one and it wasnt even in English. The bad part is if you use the free version you can listen in order. It will be at random.

    1. Yeah, I liked MORE THAN ONE. I had like 3000 tracks in liked and after I deleted those the leftover music was about 300 tracks? TT-TT
You can listen in order on the website version! Only the app is messed up :/

  7. Thank you so much for writing this post! 😀 I have been so confused on how to listen to audibooks on spotify and I couldn’t be bothered to try and work it out myself (there was so much scrolling). Your post has helped me a lot! ❤️

  8. I discovered just some weeks ago that Spotify had audiobook ! (It may have something to do with the fact that I don’t typically use this app) I listened to Jane Eyre and it was sooo good ! (I’m also quite new to audiobooks in general. My first was Grimworld by Avery Moray ❤ – I have a very flawed review on it)

    1. I had no idea for a long time as well! And when I found out I thought it was only classics and such but then I was pleasantly surprised 🙂
I only started listening to audiobooks last year myself! I can’t really focus on classics usually but I have Storytel trial now and I’m on my 4th audiobook in just a few days!! It’s amazing how a different medium can change our reading habits. ❤

  9. Thank you so much for this article and the recs. I knew Spotify had audiobooks but I never seem to find any I am really excited for. All the books you mentioned are so high up on my TBR, I can’t wait to start listening to them.
