Hello darlings!
It’s the first #5OnMyTBR of May! How are you doing this month?
#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook (me!) and you can learn more about it here or in the post announcing it. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.
This week’s prompt is Contemporary!
I know it’s a broader prompt but I decided it’s good to have a broader one every now and then. It made me realise though that a lot of ‘contemporary’ books on my TBR could be considered historical by now.
How do you clasify books set in 90s/00s?

|| I Was Born for This by Alice Oseman ||
Β

π a trans boy
π a Muslim girl
π boyband
I’m a huge fan of Radio Silence and Heartstopper so I want to read everything by Alice Oseman.
I love the way she writes contemporaries that are light, relavant, and funny but also deep and insightfull.
Β
|| Loveless by Aice Oseman ||
Β

π aro/ace rep
π feeling loveless
π friendship
Another book by Oseman.
I don’t think I’ve read a book that was specifically about aro/ace rep yet? And I’m kind of considering aro-spec label for myself so that may clear things up for me.
Also, I miss uni so books set at uni are IN.
Β
|| I Wish You All The Best by Mason Deaver ||
Β

π non-binary rep
π heard it’s cute
So, I want to read more books with tran and non-binary rep — especially now that I’m considering I may be somewhere on the non-binary spectrum and this has been on my TBR since before it’s been released.
Maybe it’s time to get to it finally.
Β
|| Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai ||
Β

π enemies to lovers
π interracial romance
Well, this looks sexy? And I’m here for it.
Especially the enemies to lovers part. And I think it has some mental health rep as well so that’s a big win already.
This is supposed to be on Scribd soon so won’t be long on my TBR anymore.
Β
|| Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde ||
π fandom
π friendship
π feminism
I’ve read The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde not so long ago and I LOVED it so I want to try more books by her.
I love her wrting style and how light and fun it is while still having some serious moments.
And I want more cool stories about fndoms!
Last thought!
Do you also feel like contemporaries and romances lately?
I don’t know if it’s the pandemic that’s causing all this craving for fluff and smut or I’m just on the fantasy burnout but contemporaries are all the jam right now.
What’s your weird new pandemic reading habit?
- Do you participate in #5OnMyTBR?
- Do you have any of those on your TBR?
- Have you read them maybe? (Make me read them then!!)

The pandemic causes me to want to read light and fluffy. Great #5onmyTBR post!

I was born in the ’90s, so to think of them as historical fiction makes me want to curl up in a ball on the couch under a blanket and hide from the cruel hands of time. But also, I read a book recently set in the ’80s and was like … this is obviously historical fiction, and a part of me died inside, so I guess it’d be a fair classification. xD
Yes for more trans/non-binary! I’m really happy to see that several of my upcoming reads have trans leads, and this is something that I never would have imagined reading. I’m thrilled. Murderbot! I read a Murderbot novella, and there was a non-binary character, and it took me by surprise but I loved it.
I confess that I don’t read that many contemporaries. Oddly enough, I’ve been reading more dark fantasy and epic fantasy during the pandemic and I’m absolutely loving it. Everyone else is like … FLUFF! And I’m like, YES, STAB HIM IN THE HEART. xD I may or may not be broken.

Right??? Even by watching early 2010s movies you get the feeling it’s dated! 90s seems so close to us but when you look at the culture change it’s enormous.
Same, I’m reading a lot of wlw & mlm rep but far too little trans and non-binary rep so I’m excited to change that. I had no idea Murderbot has a non-binary character! I have the four novellas and now I want to read them even more!!
Haha! That’s good escapism as well! When the revolution comes you’ll be the leader!! I don’t know what’s happening with this current fluff craving but it took me 9 days to read 2 fantasy books so I’m jumping on that contemporary horse for now!! β€

Well, you need to remedy that and read Murderbot ASAP! Erm … not that I can talk, because I’m also super late to the party and only just working through the novellas now. xD But yes, there’s one in the second book, and it was great, and I have no idea what to expect from the next ones haha.

That’s great to hear!! Radio Silence is one of my favourites and Solitaire didn’t fit with me as much but I still enjoyed it! π
