August 20: Favourite Tropes (a trope is a commonly used theme or plot device) (submitted by Andrea @ Books for Muse)
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and you can find weekly topics on her page.
I’ve done favourite tropes for Friday Favourites recently so I guess this will be ‘Favourite Tropes that weren’t included the last time.’ Make sure to check my prievious post as well then so we can cry about tropes even more!
They are forced to hold hands… but what is this?? Why are their hearts beating so fast and their palms get so sweaty and… is that blush that makes their faces so hot??? SPOILER: Yes, it is.
It just makes for a great chemistry and I LOVE chemistry. I need some anticipation and eye contact that’s lasts just a second too long to be casual and the waiting game of who first jumps whom, that’s all.
(For those wondering — UST means unresolved sexual tension)
Honestly, most of opposities attract but that’s such a classic and innocent one!
When some I-m-such-a-badass or I-m-the-coolest-kid-in-town character suddenly makes some niche Star Wars trivia or Very Specific Knowledge I’m just… My child now.
Well, that’s opposities attract again techincally but… Hear me out. IT’S A FUCKING GOOD ONE. Of course, providing it’s Carmilla/Laura from Carmilla webseries type not some dudebro straight up latching on his pixie dream girl and draining her whole lifeforce.
This just always gets me. ALWAYS.
That’s not exactly a trope since I see that so rarely but I’m always excited for women training people. I grew up with so many male authoritative figures and, honestly, not that many real life men to look up to. Women can and do teach us all the stuff. Show it, please.
Just give me more women who lived a long enough life they decided to straight up stop caring what people think about them and be as quirky and peculiar as possible. Dancing alone in the rain. Telling spooky stories to children and travellers. Wearing at least 15 articles of clothing and not one matches the other. I’m here for that shit.
I have a brother and so many sibling relationships either are not explored at all or seem to be written by an only-child… Where are my siblings who would die for each other but also will have a bloody fight for the last slice of pizza which will lead to a week long angry side glances and looking for an opportunity for a revenge at???
Anyway, I love to suffer and let’s finish at that.
What are your favourite tropes?? COMMENT/LEAVE A LINK TO YOUR TTT
Chuckling at #10, because same. Also, it’s not fiction, but #6 is what I love most about Jenny Lawson’s memoirs. Her husband’s responses to her taxidermy purchases crack me up every time.

Yes! I loved this movie! I haven’t read the book since I rarely both watch the adaptation and read the original but maybe someday! 😀 They are the cutest ❤
Thank you, Nandini!

I love these tropes! I’m a sucker for fake dating, but I also really love UST – it’s why I love the slow burns so much as they often have a good amount of UST 🙂 The secretly nerds and weird grandmas own my heart as well ❤

Yes! I adore the slow-burns! All the pinning and the tension! ❤
That's how to make me instantly love the book tbh! Just add some quirky grandma or some queen bee girl who suddenly drops some very specific reference and everybody's jaw drops!

Weird Grandma’s are fun, and I love female mentors and bickering but devoted siblings. Great list!

Love the “weird grandma” trope! Your list (and your blog) is fantastic. I found your site through the NetGalley readers group on Goodreads. I look forward to reading through your posts.

Fake dating was one of mine too! It’s so corny but so magic.
Also I never thought of the weird grandma trope before but now all I’m doing is making a mental catalog of books with weird grandmas!

Sometimes we need corn in our lives! Corn is self-care!
Right?? I love how they’re totaly bonkers but don’t give a shit!

I definitely love stories where the unresolved sexual tension feels palpable. It’s agonizing and yet I need it.

It is suffering but the sweetest suffering imaginable ❤

As I started reading I kept thinking ‘YES, YES, YES’ to the first six 🙂 I’m a sucker for all of those and will pretty much buy a book without reading reviews if they have those tropes ❤ Especially the secret nerd… or a grumpy character that's a secret nerd. Especially if it's a slow-burn romance. I'M SOLD. Great list! 🙂

I love secret nerds so much! Gruffy men who are secret nerds! Party girls who are secret nerds! Grumpy ‘I’m too cool for this shit’ people who are secret nerds! And if they’re nerding in a slow-burn romance? I swoon!
Thanks! 🙂
